Sustainability is most commonly defined as ‘meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’. At the City of Maple Ridge, we are committed to serving our residents in a manner that ensures prosperity for both present and future generations. Current challenges facing our city include mitigating and adapting to the effects of present and future climate change, addressing challenges our residents face with regards to homelessness and unemployment, and sustainably developing food, water, and infrastructure services necessary to meet the needs of a growing urban population.
To address these challenges, the City is taking action through several corporate and community initiatives. However, we cannot do it alone. In order to meet the City’s sustainability goals, we need cooperation and effort from all of our residents. Browse the sections below to learn about what you can do to live sustainably and help your city. Together, we can work towards Maple Ridge’s vision of a socially, environmentally, and economically sustainable community now, and in the future.
The City of Maple Ridge recognizes its important role in ensuring the sustainability of the city, as it is responsible for many decisions that influence the community's impact on the planet. These decisions include managing land use, water, waste and other municipal services, as well as the infrastructure required to provide these services. The City of Maple Ridge, therefore, has significant jurisdiction over making changes that can support sustainability through both infrastructure and policy changes.
We are making steps towards a stronger tomorrow by completing projects and initiatives that strengthen the sustainability of our community. In this section you will find some of the completed, ongoing, and upcoming projects in our community. These projects have addressed various components of sustainability including economic, social, and environmental issues.
Sustainability Action Plan
The City’s Sustainability Action Plan (PDF) provides a framework for finding ways to balance human needs with nature's limited productivity. This plan discusses the city’s journey to carbon neutrality, outlines sustainable achievements for nine strategic focus areas, and proposes future steps to take towards achieving sustainability in those areas. These plans were produced through a collaborative effort involving many different municipal departments, including Planning, Engineering, Finance, and Parks and Recreation. In the future, the city plans to update and build upon the Sustainability Action Plan in order to ensure that we are prepared for whatever challenges occur in the years to come.
